One of the signature dishes for the House of Ho is the ‘shaking’ beef made with 30-day aged Aberdeen Angus in a soy sauce. This didn’t look like a large platter but the intensity of the beef made each mouthful very filling, and eating it in isolation of any sources really brought out the flavours.

The walls of the Avila house are made of adobe brick, a material consisting of clay, water and other organic materials like straw. The public is invited to visit the Eames House for a self-guided tour of the exterior during open hours. Groups with 10 or more visitors must make an appointment and sign a group release form prior to visiting. Guided, one-hour personal tours of the interior are available for $275 (1-2 adults) and $450 (3-4 adults). When this residential house was built by Vienna-born Rudolf Schindler back in inspired by a recent trip to Yosemite with his wife - it was extremely unconventional at the time for a place to live. In reality, it was meant to be a cooperative live-work space between two families, much like a camp site. Having been the residence of the Schindlers and then other creatives, this WeHo hidden gem is now listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is open to the public Wednesday through Sunday as an architectural center. There are more than 1,000 World Heritage sites around the world, and the group of Wright sites is now among only 24 sites in the U.S. The collection represents the first modern architecture designation in the country on the prestigious list. Located in Highland Park northeast of Downtown LA, Heritage Square Museum is a living history museum that explores the settlement and development of Southern California during its first 100 years of statehood.

The 23-room Banning House is widely regarded as the finest example of domestic Greek Revival architecture in Southern California. The House of Hô EXPERIENCE
The Gamble House in Pasadena is widely regarded as a masterpiece of the Arts and Crafts style. The three-story house and its furnishings were designed by Charles and Henry Greene in 1908 for David and Mary Gamble of the Procter & Gamble Company. Today, the house is owned by the City of Pasadena and operated by the University of Southern California School of Architecture.
There is an open ground floor restaurant as well as a nicely stocked wine room and there’s more public dining space on the second floor. We were taken to one of the third-floor private dining rooms, a perfect size for the 12 or so blogging friends with me. The large circular table let us all chat without shouting, and was social enough to allow dishes to be passed around easily. We started with a small cup of Nanbu Bijin, Tokubetsu Junmai, or Vietnamese Saki as it was described and were asked to make a wish and give thanks, in true Vietnamese family tradition. The House of Hô is a modern Pan-Asian restaurant in Fitzrovia, inspired by East Asia’s rich culinary history. The warren of rooms includes three private dining rooms spec’d out for meetings, a semi-private "wine" room and the top floor Ho Lounge Bar complete with DJs and pumping soundtrack.

It clearly works as everybody was praising the food, and I only hope that some of the photos here reflect that. The perfect cubes of watermelon, cut from the centre had all the flavour and ripeness you could want, which cleansed the palette for each mouthful of duck. This was my favourite dish, and it acted as a perfect separator between the meat and the upcoming fish dishes. The floor below has three separate private dining rooms including this well-appointed room laid out for 8 diners, with a gorgeous fireplace that could almost seem like you were in a London house. The venue was originally a four storey townhouse, with each floor now home to a private and individually designed dining area.

The Stahl House (aka Case Study House #22) was designed by architect Pierre Koenig and built in 1959. Perched in the Hollywood hills above the city, the Stahl House is an icon of Mid-Century Modern architecture. In 2016, TIME named Shulman's photo one of the 100 Most Influential Images of All Time. The only Richard Neutra-designed house that is now open regularly to the public, the Neutra VDL Studio and Residences is a Silver Lake hidden gem that was built by the famed architect in 1932. He ran his practice out of a studio here, and along with his wife Dione, raised three sons in this house, which he designed to demonstrate that Modernist principles could be enjoyed by less affluent clients, while maintaining privacy.
The eight historic structures located at the museum were constructed during the Victorian Era. They were saved from demolition and rebuilt at the museum site along the Arroyo Seco. Historic residences at the museum include the Hale House, Valley Knudsen House, John Ford House, Perry Mansion and the Octagon House. The buildings serve as a perfect background to educate the public about the everyday lives of Southern Californians from the Civil War to the early 20th Century. Guided tours of the museum are supplemented by living history performances, educational programs, hands-on training, exhibitions and special events.

Vietnamese food is one of my favourites, so I was pleased to be invited by the House of Ho to experience its new menu and cuisine in its new premises in the heart of Fitzrovia. The original House of Ho restaurant in Soho is still there, but has been renamed the Ho Modern Vietnamese and has kept its casual small table appeal. The House of Ho on Percy Street, is all new, with a new chef, new menu and a whole new dining experience that is slightly more formal and aimed at larger groups. At The House of Hô, you can indulge in the best of Vietnamese cuisine without leaving Fitzrovia. Offering a delicious menu at reasonable prices, the food is both flavourful and satisfying.
The Banning House was designated a California Historical Landmark in 1935, Los Angeles Historic-Cultural Monument No. 25 in 1963, and added to the National Register of Historic Places in May 1971. The new head Chef at the House of Ho is Ian Pengelley, and he dropped in to talk to us. Regular daily shipments of ingredients were brought in from Vietnam and matched by the best locally sourced meat and fish to deliver the finest Vietnamese food experience.
